I Wanna Rock Right Now!
Yesterday May 7th I had the pleasure of going with my Fiance to the New Jannus Landing to see none other than Lisa Lisa and Rob Base. The concert was awesome and took me back, so lets jump in the time machine.
It was the 80’s and let me clarify, the decade of the best music EVER. I was young and living in Queens NY a place where music was exploding everywhere. From Run DMC and Jam Master J to Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam (and Full Force). I was listening to radio one day or was it watching Friday Night Video’s; which ever there it was “I Wonder if I Take you Home” and my crush on Lisa Lisa was born. I don’t have a crush on her now but back then at the age of 11 I was all about Lisa Lisa. Her music was infectious and so touching (ok slight sarcasm there), but still you always wanted to move when when you heard it.
Around about the same time I was introduced to one of the best dance songs ever, It takes Two.
I wanna rock right now
I’m Rob Base and I came to get down
I’m not internationally known
But I’m known to rock the microphone
Because I get stoopid, I mean outrageous
Stay away from me if you’re contagious
‘Cause I’m the winner, no, I’m not the loser
To be an M.C. is what I choose ‘a
Ladies love me, girls adore me
I mean even the ones who never saw me
Like the way that I rhyme at a show
The reason why, man, I don’t know
So let’s go, ’cause
How can you not just want to belt that out when you hear the beginning. Its such and infectious song to hear and sing along to. Its one of the songs I know just about all the words to. Ok Fast Forward…
So I was thinking as I heard they [Lisa Lisa and Rob Base] were coming to town at Jannus that it would be awesome to see them. But to be honest I flip flopped; one minute I was lets go, the next we can miss it. Pretty sure Shauna was like make your mind up. We decided that if we won tickets we would go but otherwise we’d stay in. Then I heard them on the radio on 94.1 Wild in a commercial and I was like uhm I think we need to go. SO we still tried to win tickets but decided to go regardless. So out of no where Jannus had a text contest for the first 50 texters to win tickets, but they fucked up the text number on their page so when Shauna realized this she sent me the right number and BOOOOYA free tickets.
Regardless off the free tickets I’m so glad we went it was a great night out with good music and a lovely woman, but I have to admit something. As Friday was moving along I realized that I knew alot of Lisa Lisa songs but only really 2 Rob Base songs. So I was like what the hell is he gonna do for the other 45 - 60 minutes he’s on stage. Just sing two long versions of It Takes Two and Joy and Pain? However I have to admit he put on a great show and yes he did his two famous songs and the crowd went wild.
As for Lisa Lisa, don’t get me started she was on FIRE. She put down every great hit she did and did it better than good but AWESOMELY. I was surprised she sounded the same or maybe even better. I’ll be honest at first I wasn’t sure if it was all her singing and not back up lip syncing (sorry Lisa), but then I was like damn she still really has her chops. She sounded so good.
Hats off to both Lisa and Rob for blowing out a terrific show and to the new owner of Jannus I’ll be honest still on the fence about how I like the new digs. They are growing on me though. I do like the REAL bathrooms (so did Shauna) and the multiple bars I have to admit. And I love the fact that that damn pole from the stage is history. It’ll take a couple more shows there for me to decided. One thing is for sure its classed up a bit and the hoochies in their barley nothing outfits where out in droves. And to the drunk stupid bitch who kept trying to rub up on me, you played with your life cause Shauna would have cut you and the next you try to grab my phone you might draw back a numb.
OH one more thing, to the owner of Jannus, if you’re listening BRING BACK THE REGGAE ACTS, and I mean all them all the time over and over again. Thanks.
